Syria

Built with the class and divided by concept — context, power, intervention, accountability.

A student-built deck, split by concept rather than by chronology, which is also the right way to revise it.

Published with the students' permission.

Why reach for it

Multi-actor conflict. State, non-state armed groups, regional powers, great powers, IGOs and humanitarian organisations, all in one theatre. If a question asks about the range of actors in contemporary conflict, this is the case.

Intervention. Several kinds, by several actors, with different justifications — which makes it a strong case for evaluating what "intervention" even means.

Accountability after violence. Documentation, universal jurisdiction, and why the standard route to the ICC was closed. Excellent for justice and intervention.
