A region rather than a country, which is itself useful: it lets you argue about regional dynamics without pretending a border contains them.
Why reach for it
State capacity. What a state cannot do, and what fills the gap. This is where the phrase "fragile state" stops being a label and becomes a description of specific missing capabilities.
External actors, plural and changing. Former colonial powers, regional organisations, UN missions, private military companies, and the shifts between them over a short period. Rare, and very good for a question about the changing role of external actors.
Human security. Food, water, displacement and climate pressure alongside armed conflict — the argument for a broader definition of security, made by the facts rather than by a theorist.
